2023 Belay Estate Pinot Noir
Overview
Reviews
2023 Belay Estate Pinot Noir
Sonoma Coast
Tasting notes
Planted on a ridge top above the town of Occidental, Belay is our Demeter certified Biodynamic® Estate Pinot Noir. As a company, our ultimate goal to nurture fruit from grape to glass has now become an extraordinary reality. Vertically integrated from harvest to bottling, we find winegrowing a monumental task akin to climbing a mountain, and the Belay has served as both an anchor and stepping stone on this journey of ascent. Our Estate Pinot Noir is carefully picked over multiple days, as the fruit reaches physiological maturity across blocks with subtle terroir variations. The cooler growing season in 2023 resulted in a Belay harvest spanning from late September into early October, a full month later than past years. Low and slow maturation resulted in fully lignified stems throughout the Estate, prompting our decision to ferment with a generous 32% whole cluster inclusion, yielding a gorgeously lifted expression with hints of spice and earth.
Production notes
Rich in depth and punctuated by bright fruit, the 2023 Belay Estate Pinot Noir draws in the senses. Lingonberry preserves and wild strawberry meld with perfumy dried roses and quince paste, while touches of cola and star anise convey subtle warmth. Medium-bodied and seamlessly textured, the Belay's well-integrated tannins are framed around a savory pinch of rosemary and thyme. The finish lingers with mouthwatering allure, while the wine's balance and complexity suggest a long life ahead, making the choice to enjoy now or cellar a particularly tempting dilemma.

“The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate Belay is a wine of extreme beauty. Wild cherry, menthol, licorice, spicebox, lavender and gravel infuse the 2023 with tons of nuance and complexity. Medium in body yet quite plush, with notable resonance, the Belay has a lot going on. A healthy dollop of stems (32%) and a touch more new oak (35%) than is the norm here work so well. This is such a classy, polished wine.”
